Not a bad place to be on Memorial Day weekend. We turned the island back over to Japan in 1968 but still have access (via military aircraft only) for training exercises. One of my friends scored me a seat for a day trip. A few things really caught my attention. The beach is very steep with dense, sticky sand. It also has very strong currents and a wicked undertow. Inland, the vegetation is impenetrable. Without the paved road, I never would have made it to the top of Mt. Suribachi! I can't imagine trying to fight in those conditions and it makes me all the more thankful for those that did.

From one soldier family to another - thank you! Iwo Jima looks incredibly interesting. What an amazing jump straight into history.
